So Far So Good : HP Officejet J4550 All In One Printer
For a $49 printer which includes fax capability, you can't beat this. Yes, it is slow, but the print quality is fine for everyday printing of letters and documents. It's not meant for super high-quality color prints or large volume printing so don't expect it for $49. Setup on XP and Vista was simple and worked the first time. If I were to rate this on value alone, it would be a 4+ stars. I think the previous reviewer got a defective unit.

GREAT printer at an incredible price!!! : Canon MP480 All-in-One Photo Printer
This is a compact all-in-one printer (about the length and width of a laptop). The software and flip up screen are very easy to use and the color quality of the copier is excellent. It also has a quiet mode for printing after dark. It uses a large deal of ink, but so do all of the Canon inkjet printers. Overall, a good value, but they forgot one thing. There is no auto power-on/off setting, so you either have to leave the printer on all the time or turn it on every time you wish to use it.

Great Color Laser for the Money! : HP Color LaserJet 3600n Printer ( Q5987A#ABA )
I bought this HP3600n printer as an upgrade for my worn-out HP2500. I immediately experienced a drastic drop in printing speed. The print language is HP JetReady 4.2, which is a host-based language. HP seems to have removed the processing power to reduce costs on these low-end printers and placed the burden on the users computer. I am running OSX 10.4.11 on a G4 PPC tower and printing to this printer is unacceptable. It takes 1 hours to print a 24-page document from InDesign and 9 minutes to print a 1 page Illustrator doc that contains only text. Also you surrender the computer while this processing takes place. It is like not having a print spooler function.

You also have to put up with the very light and contrasty color from the new toners. This can be tweaked out by cranking every color control from the panel ( plus two for all colors and all shades.) I suspect that the amount of toner used per page will correspondingly go up resulting in high consumable costs.

It was mistake on my part in buying this printer. The correct choice for a unit with comparable duty cycle and features but with a processor is the CP3505. Compare and contrast the two printers at HP web site and you will see that a lot of features are obtained for a small increase in price.

Thank goodness that my supplier allowed me to return this printer.

Think long and hard before buying any model HP laser printer with host based processing.

A beautifully engineered printer for serious photographers : HP Photosmart 8250 Printer (Q3470A#ABA)
Pros:

Print speed is great (once it has performed it's maintenance cycle).
Dedicated tray for 4x6 photo paper.
Photo printing top notch, including great automatic refinishing options (red eye, smart focus, smart sharpness) - as good as any photo lab on the best HP paper.
Direct print from media cards, including still capture from some movie modes.
Hopeful ink cost should be better than combined cartridge models, has 6 individual carts that are ~ $10 a pop.

Cons:

Long and noisy "start up" maintenance cycle or as I call it the daily regiment. Once completed it's fairly quiet and FAST.
Slow transfer to PC from media card readers - will not replace your dedicated USB 2.0 card reader that's for sure.
HP's lovely virtual print driver...if you want to share the printer (or use it for home printing from office VPN/Remote Desktop connections) the driver needs to be manually installed on all PCs - don't bother calling HP for help on that though ;-) had to figure it out on my own.
Black and white printing ... not really black, more of a greenish grey. Oh well, it's a photo printer first.
